I've got one of each to sell at the moment if you're interested - mail me off-list.
The eMate's great for what you're looking for - I use mine on trains all the time. As a journalist, it works a treat for interviews as I type faster than I take notes/shorthand - and I can just download notes to my eMac in Classic mode via a Palm serial to USB adapter. Battery power is great, it's almost impossible to 'lose' stuff as it saves automatically, and you can do a stack of other useful things with it, too. Check out http://www.splorp.com/newton/faq/ for everything you need to know about the Newton series.
Cheers
Russ
