It's not a web based address so it's likely it's been harvested from
someone's address book as you describe.

I set up the throwaway yahoo address I use for this list just for the
reasons you describe. Curiously, it has yet to attract any spam despite
being in use for over a year on five lists.

The problematic address is one using a domain name which I own and is used
for my work only. If it becomes a real problem I will have to change it.

The latest one to bounce back indicated that the outgoing mail had an
attachment which looked to me by the name, a classic Windows virus file.
