There are widespread documented accounts of OS X rejecting some RAM as not compatible or such on various platforms (personally i've come across it mostly in iMacs and PowerMacs upgraded with el-cheapo RAM) so it's not outside the bounds of possibility that it could be rejecting the RAM.

my powerbook g4 did this when i got a 512 stick from crucial that it didnt like. it was nasty. the system locked even when i was booting off the os disks. i thought my brand new pb was a gonner.

crucial did replace the memory. which was nice.
