As an alternative solution...
If you really don't want to leave 9 behind why not run it
on Mac-on-Linux (http://www.maconlinux.org/) over a GNU/Linux 
distro such as Debian (http://www.nl.debian.org/ports/powerpc/) 
or Yellow Dog Linux (www.yellowdoglinux.com).

The GNU OS will do all of the networking stuff for you with 
OS-X, though I don't know about I-chat. However you could run 
OS-X in another window when necessary ;-)
