Microsoft is where it is at because they got in there at the start and created a market dominance. With Linux out there and Windows I really doubt there is a possibility to grow the Mac OSX market on software alone.
The OS working badly on those intel boxes would also reflect badly on Apple.
They could use the Mac OS already if they wanted, dont forget that Darwin is open source. Whack a nice x window system on it and your off.

But surely, if they did that, there would be no point (from a PC user's view) in buying a Mac? Couldn't it harm Apple's market share even more?

From the recent article on Forbes which requires a subscription (anyone here?) some bits taken from it are talked about here:

'Most tantalizing of all is scuttlebutt that three of the biggest PC makers
are wooing Jobs to let them license OS X and adapt it to computers built
around standard Intel chips. Why? They want to offer customers, many of whom
are sick of the security problems that go with Windows and tired of waiting
for Longhorn, an alternative.'
Hmmm, could get interesting...I know everyone keeps saying that Apple will
not go into this because of x and y, etc...however, they have grabbed the
attention of the PC masses with the iPod and now are starting to try and get
a slightly larger percentage of the PC market with the Mac Mini...is this an
in-road or market study to see if the PC sector is ripe for such a move?
