Thanks for your account of the Mini so far Marcus, good to hear a real user's view as well...it will be interesting to hear if your initial impression changes with time or gets better (lets hope the latter!)
Unfortunately for the Mini, my new Powerbook has pride of place now, so it's taken on its media server role already, and as such I don't spend as much time interacting with it as I did.
Mind me asking if that is a subjective judgement of the RAM or if you have
looked at numbers to back that up? The reason I ask is that my PB (1.33 GHz,
80 GB, 512 MB) 'seems' to run fine without much swapping and not much
noticeable slow down but when I check the stats with (for example) activity
monitor I can see that 512 MB is far too little for even the lighter stuff I
do...I get around 17k to 20k page outs after a few days light use and the
free memory is almost always running with less than 30 MB if more than a few
apps are open at the same time...Might be good to check before using it as a
server...
It's completely subjective, just based on how responsive the interface felt, and how little I had to sit looking at the spinning beachball. My new Powerbooks feels a little snappier, but it does have a slightly faster processor, 512M and a 5400 RPM hard drive, which I think helps a fair bit.
I'm not too worried about the page ins/outs. Again nothing concrete, but I've not noticed any adverse affects from swapping. I've not had an out of memory error since I moved to OSX two years ago, and now with a virtual memory size of 5 gigs, that's a huge amount of memory being shifted back and fore and used and reused. Just opening and closing applications in different orders would mean different parts of the whole memory space swapping in and out.
OSX will also use up just about all the physical memory it can, as it caches just about everything, to improve performance. It's the same with Window's server products - they'll load as much as possible into memory as cache, and free it up as needed. That'll add to your page in/out count too.
