Wasn't there a startup key to initiate a firmware update - though I have
done this I don't remember much more about it.

Backup methods depend on budget.
If you get an extermal HD its a cinch and you can drag and drop your data or
use lacies's free Silverkeeper if you want to keep it synched while you try
out possible solutions.
Otherwise its networking to another Mac's HD or burning to DVD or CD.
Unless I missed the thread you don't say what you are running and whether
this occurred after any specific update etc.
