Unless you go for a an erase and install or an arichive and install
you will see a drop in performance, Trust me I know without looking I
had more on my G5 to reinstall than most but it was well worth the
effort.
As a sidenote are you certain that spotlight has completed indexing
the hard drive
Don't confuse Quartz Extreme with Quartz 2D Extreme, 2D puts more
load on the GPU to spare the processor the task of redrawing the
interface and was disabled by default in 10.4 for all machines I have
enabled it on my machine because it was not one of the ones affected
by the bugs that needed ironing out.
You can check
with the terminal, type
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver
Quartz2DExtremeEnabled 1
to check if it's enabled type
defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver
Quartz2DExtremeEnabled
it'll then come back with 0 if it's disabled, 1 if it's enabled.

Core image isnt being used - this machine cant cope with it.

Not sure if 10.4.1 has enabled Quartz 2D extreme by default , if
it has you could disable this to switch menu and interface
rendering back to the CPU from the GPU

have seen/read state that there is a performance increase.
Now the only reason i notice it is quartz extreme - i have a
GeForce 2mx card in place, and normally the effects are as smooth
as can be, but since tiger there is noticeable reduction in the
refresh rate.
Any thoughts?
