Mark - thank for your reply and encouragement. I agree that the problem is chiefly one of very poor advice - nay direction - from HP but there are also other factors at work, I believe, not least how Tiger now behaves with AppleTalk and - perhaps - how it interacts with other machines, sharing the same printers on AppleTalk.

You are using the latest Tiger update which is supposed to address some AppleTalk issues?

As I understood things, AppleTalk support for printing has been changed such that you get a kind of AT emulation, presumably in preparation for dropping AT altogether. Given the rate at which Epson and HP move in support of (a) Mac OS and (b) older printers I can quite believe that such a move by Apple will wrong foot them and they will take months or years to address it, if they can bothered at all. More long standing listers will remember my whining about Epson in this regard when OS X came out, in that we bought the big Epson printer on the strength of their assurance that they would have an OSX driver for that machine within a month or two. Which changed to "not sure when" to "no plans" and eventually a release of a driver (without announcement) last November. I rather doubt we will see any adjustments to that driver for future versions of OSX. HP have dropped support for our LaserJet but we do have the iProof option which was never happy with OSX 10.3 but apparently works fine with 10.4. GIMP has been a constant annoyance and we do not intend attempting to use it again.

All that said, we are back up and running (touch wood) but need to revive our ESC3000 colour which needs head-reviving flushing. Can anyone recommend a cleaner? I know about the Lyson option but I wondered if some work better than others for use with the Epson Piezzo heads.

Cheers

Drew
