you enable, disable root logon normally using net info manager.
You managed to circumvent this by using root as your username.
Go to apps/utilities/netinfo manager.
You will see a column with users at the bottom of it. Click on that
then select the root user
Click on the lock to make changes, then change the root password to *
I think this will prevent signing on as root.

I think you could be right. When I restored Panther and went to log
in, I typed my password and it refused me access. I checked that
the hint was correct and typed it in again but I was refused access
every time, so I got the Install Disc and used the change password
facility. I noticed that initially I had put it in as root, which
was a mistake (this was about 0400 hrs in the mornings!) but I
changed it by removing the password from root and putting it on Me.
I can now log in but have the two options: Me and Other.... Not
sure how to disable ROOT login if it does not work with the
facility I described though.
