I went to Mac Expo yesterday at around 10:30am for about 30 minutes. My impression was that the event was very busy (given the time of day), but not terribly exciting.
I went yesterday morning, around 11am. I live 15 minutes walk away, and I had a free ticket from signing up early on the website, so I had no excuse. I stayed for about 90 minutes - about 20 minutes of that was taken watching the presentation of Aperture. I'm no pro photographer, and I don't even have a camera that shoots in RAW, but it can do some pretty amazing stuff.
I did leave wondering what the point of such shows are these days. The last time I went to computer shows was back in the late eighties, when the Atari ST and Amiga were the machines of the day. Back then, there wasn't much internet, and the local shops stocked very little, so the chance to wander around, see all the hardware, try out the software, and collect bags full of fliers was great. These days, living in London, I can call into the Apple store and check out the hardware, and generally download trial versions of any software I'm interested in.
I suppose there was a chance to meet people from behind the scenes, like the writes of the various Mac magazines. I did stagger home under the weight of all the 5 magazine for £5 offers, and it was interesting to look in the Mac User museum, as I'd never see a Mac Cube in real life (bigger than I was expecting!). And there was some money off, but I wondered what the difference would be between Micro Anvika's deals and the Ebuyer or Dabs deals you can get any day. I did spend a while wandering around the edges where the smaller stands were too, so I suppose more of those with the likes of Panic, Delicious Monster or other small software houses would have been interesting, but probably impractical for the companies.
It was busier than I expected after some of the reports on the Mac Format forum, and not a bad way to pass 90 minutes.
