I've found the orange or yellow Datawrite DVD-Rs from eBuyer 
satisfactory with my LiteOn DVD recorder (also from eBuyer). I don't 
have a Pismo, though. I also use re-recordable DVDs for routine TV 
recording. They won't play in my Mac direct but I can rip them to HD 
using Mac the Ripper.

(Unless you need a combo VCR/DVD for something else, it's cheaper - and 
not much more difficult - to copy your tapes by connecting the VCR and 
DVD recorder with a SCART lead.)
