No, I think that it uses the same sort of system as iPhoto for jpegs etc., with 
the addition of CoreImage based non-destructive edits. AFAIK, there are no 
conversions going on when you import non RAW files.

As an aside, there's an in depth review at ars technica. Aperture doesn't come 
out too well...

Ouch! To say the reviewer was disappointed would be an understatement.

The corresponding discussion forum brings up a good question too, if I understand the facts correctly. Since the CoreImage non-destructive edit algorithms could get "fixed" by Apple in later OS updates, does that mean that your edited images are going to look different in several months/years time?
