I tried this, as well as turning on the firewire disc well after
bootup.....still the same. I'll try the "shift" suggestion next - what items
are disabled if I boot Tiger with the "shift" held down? Will it disable my
Kensington Turboball? (this is the only third-party thing I have loaded -
could THIS be my problem all along, or is it likely to be a LaCie
firmware-bridge thing?)

Thanks Drew and Richard for your help....I'll also see what I can find on
this topic by googling....
