Is a Mac Mini really a quiet computer?

Pretty quiet, yes. Mine makes a quiet sort of "whoosh" noise, presumably the fan, which only becomes really noticeable when the machine has spent some time burning backup CDs/DVDs or copying to an external Firewire disk.

If the machine is only going to be used as a 'spare', how often are you going to use it? Is it really worth going through all the hassle of exchanging your tower for a mini, just for the occasional boot up? I guess it comes down to that dodgy fan and how much you'd get for your tower. It deserves to be more than a part exchange for a mini :-)
