Hey there
Just thought I'd post a follow-up. Following a tip off this list I
purchased a Netgear DG384G from MicroAvinka last Saturday. Messed
about with it a little last week, and determined that it would be
just fine sitting where by Apple (White) Base Station was.
Woke this AM and, noted that I couldn't dial out any longer, so I
swapped out the Apple ABS for the Netgear. Entered the user name and
password Virgin supplied me with and it was a simple as that - I was
online!
Five Mac's in the house (Two G4 PowerBooks, two Clamshell G3 iBooks
and an iMac DV+) are all happily on-line, taking to the Netgear
router without issue and using a shared printer that hangs off one of
the G3 iBooks.
To be honest, I'm having issues getting my two iPaqs to talk to the
Netgear wireless router, but they run Windows Mobile and therefore
you have to enter Hex strings for the password. I haven't figured
out how to coerce that gobblty goop from the router yet as I'm having
so much fun surfing!!
I'm assuming that the Netgear router is locked down out of the box.
At least from briefly reviewing the settings, it seems that way.
Anything I should be aware of, as all these machines will now be
online 24/7.
In any case, thanks for all the tips - it was totally painless and
something I should have done years ago.
Take care
Dave Coker
