It is the 800 MHz G4 version and well over a year old (grrrr). So far
as I know it has been showing 256 since the start, though I can't be
sure as it is not one I maintain regularly. We have had it from new.
i will try doing as you suggest but I can only find the AHT disc for
G4 Panther and the OS on the iBook is Tiger. Do you think that will
matter?

I am not sure if I am being especially stupid but I have a conundrum
as far as the RAM in one of our G4 iBooks is concerned. It has,
according to the hardware profile, 256 MB of RAM hard wired and,
until yesterday, 128MB of RAM in the slot. However, it was only
showing 256 MB of RAM as being addressed. I assumed this was because
of a fault with the RAM stick in the machine, so I changed it
yesterday for a new 512 MB stick and the profile now says there is:
256 MB on the board, 512 MB in the slot and 640 MB RAM overall. Am I
being dense?
Which model iBook is it ?
Maybe some of the logic board ram has gone faulty, try running the
AHT disc
that came with the machine.
