I sent that info to my host, and he wrote back:

That's it.  I had created the ftpd.conf file, and I had the umask
command in there, with the right permissions.  What I didn't have was
that little "all", which fixed it.  It should work for you now without
having to change permissions.

But I'm still having the same problem. Does he need to reboot the server or
something?

Hmm. That link created an infinite loop. You're right Macromedia's site is
horrible. Too much candy covering the meat & potatoes. I'll try later, but
if I have trouble, how big is it?
