Yes, I think we can all agree that we are flogging a dead horse here, but it 
is still a crap (excuse my language) situation because JDBC is the default 
driver proposal when you use the assistant in OOo to create a MySQL database. 
The fact of the matter is that NeoOffice does work with the JDBC connector, 
and OOo does not.

I haven't tested this yet, but will do probably tomorrow. You have to register 
with them beforehand to obtain a trial period version with a limited user

This driver is available as a "Try Before You Buy".
Fact : the alternative ODBC driver that I found here works in 2.0.x and 
doesn't work in 2.1 or 2.2 because someone changed the functionality in that 
development branch of OOo and broke compatibility with the driver :-((.
