The fact of the matter is that NeoOffice does work with the JDBC connector, and OOo does not. Fact : the alternative ODBC driver that I found here works in 2.0.x and doesn't work in 2.1 or 2.2 because someone changed the functionality in that development branch of OOo and broke compatibility with the driver :-((.
