2007/4/30, [EMAIL PROTECTED] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:
I'm attempted to download a version of Open Office for my Mac. I
downloaded the one that is for X 11 (but it says to choose that one if
I'm running OS X). So I download the one it tells me to and then it
says I need to have OS X 11 installed.

Where is the link for Panther?

Thanks,
Martha

Hello Martha,

please read the installation help (a pdf) on the OpenOffice.org for Mac pages:
see http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/
the file is:
http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/Howto_OOo_2.0_MacOSX_english.pdf

X11 is a windowing program that you need to use OpenOffice.org on Mac.
It is something different from your Mac OS X 10.3.9, that's the
operating system.
(So OS X 11 doesn't yet exist, the next version of the Mac OS will be
Leopard, 10.5.x)

For your version of the Mac OS X, Panther, you need the specific
version on X11 that sits on your installation disks, or theta can be
downloaded from the Apple site. Be attentive that you don't install
the Tiger version of X11!
Apple download:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/x11formacosx.html

The initial plan of the Mac porting team was to make the new version,
2.2, only for Tiger, but finally, a version for Panther was released:
You can download it from here:
ftp://ooopackages.good-day.net/pub/OpenOffice.org/MacOSX/SRC680_m209/
You'll probably need the en-US version (scroll down the list).
I'd advise not to use the en-UK version because this may have problems.

After you've read the How-To, downloaded and installed X11 and the
Panther version of OOo 2.2: if you have any problems, please contact
the list again

Good luck!
