I'm still on X11 2.1.1 but I already had the issue you reported
with X11 2.1.1rc1 or so but it dissapeared in the final 2.1.1.
release. Since the Startscript already behaved poorly with the
original X11 shipping with Leopard and showing a Timeout error I
already had an alias set for OOo, alias OOo="open
/Applications/OpenOffice.org\ 2.3.app/Contents/MacOS/soffice &" in
my .bash_profile. Now I only type OOo in the terminal and OOo
launches. That another terminal window opens showing an error may
be a bug in either Apple's terminal, X11 or Xquartz. But besides
that this for me this is the best workaround on Leopard.

I haven't done any Applescript yet so I'm not the guy to rewrite
our existing Startscript for Leopard but maybe someone else is able
to do it.

It won't work with Tiger. Leopards X11 is based on X.org while
Tiger X11 is based on Xfree86. You may be able to compile the X.org
X11 with Tiger but it's not that easy. After two days still
installing and compiling the depencies through MacPorts I finally
gave up and reinstalled the X11 from the Tiger DVD again.

There were some issues with remote login and various other stuff in
the X11 or better Xquartz release shipping with Leopard. While I
don't need remote login various users depend on it or want it to
work so they updated their X11 package.
