Hello Joe,

I have just tested the OOo_3.0.0_080314 version. Generally it is of course coming along quite well, good work. However, the way the Aqua builds I've tried so far handles fonts is totally un-mac-like, in that it only recognizes the default Roman weight/style, and if present, bold and italic or bold/italic combination. One of the strengths for which the Mac is renowned (and why as long as 15 years ago, newspapers and magazines scrapped their typesetting machines to employ networked Macs) was because of its sophistication in handling typography; it is an assumed standard on the Mac.

With OOo Aqua, it appears that none of the power of the Mac's typographic sophistication is utilized. Many commercial typeface families have other than bold and italic weights, some families having up to 20 or more variations, e.g. Adobe's Garamond. Since none of the weights/styles are neither "bold" or "italic" only the roman weights show up for use in OOo. In the font menu, only "Adobe Garamond" is displayed; in reality there are 20 other variants/weights/styles in that font family that are thereby inaccessible. That is just one of many, many examples.

Do you have any plans on incorporating better font accessibility to fix this so OOo Aqua can recognize all these font variants before the release version? Please let me know, I think it is a significant issue.

Most font styles are available in the Format->Character dialog. There is a bug in the application layer that prevents proper handling of especially condensed/expanded styles, but other styles are affected too (please see http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=79878 for details).

Having only the Format->Character dialog to select the different styles is of course not sufficient at all for a nice user experience, so the team responsible for a great UI is working on a better approach (see the issues http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=43495 and the related issue http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=2867 for details).

When these open issues are solved the remaining task is to also make font features (e.g. "monospaced digits") available via the UI.
