One way to handle this would be to use a local copy of the filesystem, which gets synced on changes with the storage in the sky (like what Apple's iDisk does, if you configure it to). All I/O would then be local, and the copy on the Internet would be synced in the background, and with larger I/O sizes. That kind of mechanism may be good for any network filesystem, even.
