Are you mounting with the "allow_other" option?  At 
<http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/wiki/OPTIONS 
 > it says Spotlight requires this (because pieces of Spotlight run as  
root).

Is spotlight succeeding in creating & writing to a ".Spotlight-V100"  
folder on your volume?
