This was the problem. lib was a symlink to itself and lib\ 1 had somehow been created. Thanks very much. For others, note you may have to do the following from terminal:
cd /usr/local/ sudo -s <password> rm -r lib mv lib\ 1 lib As noted, issue 278 in the issues area also has instructions that are relevant. Thanks again.
