Disregard that error message from my previous post, that was of the
value I returned from the funciton call.

So my problem stands, for some reason, MacFUSE is calling
removeItemAtPath for a folder/directory and not removeDirectoryAtPath.
Maybe I need to set other POSIX attributes?
