I'm not sure I understand everything about MacFUSE, but could it be used as the basis for a virtual CD/DVD writer (that would ultimately write an ISO or DMG file rather than physically burn a CD or DVD)? If you're wondering what would be the benefit of such a virtual CD/DVD writer, some authoring software (Apple Logic in DVD-A mode, Minnetonka diskWelder Bronze) only want to write to a DVD rather than making an image file. Fooling those apps into writing an image file through a virtual optical writer would be a time (and media) saver.
