So:
No, Sony didn't know anything other people don't know, the flash drive
got formatted Fat32 at some point and almost anyone can read and write
fat32.
Your new drive is over the 32GB limit of Fat32 so it got formatted NTFS.
For whatever reason Apple decided to only support reading from NTFS systems
rather than implementing Read and Write. It probably had something to do
with Apple's ego not fitting in the room with Microsoft's ego.
Anyway you have several solutions:
1) Use Windows filesharing to move files back and forth. This is preferred
for large files.
2) Use something like Live Mesh to move the files back and forth. This
would work for smaller files.
3) If you need to keep up with the sneaker net, then MacFUSE will allow
you to read and write back and forth once you learn how to use the ntfs3g
program that is not included or supported, I have heard about MacFUSION,
which I know next to nothing about and it might give you a nice GUI to allow
you to mount NTFS drives.

5 hours reading blog posts about how great the language is.
