Not sure about NTFS, but on linux ext2 I couldnt get my indexing to work unless I mounted the volume as a local volume. Try that. There are other commands on indexing in general out there on google. I abandoned mine because I found macfuse and sshfs to be unreliable and crash constantly and lose the connection. Not what I can live with.
