Just a warning. About 9 months ago I tried to activate the write access of OSX for NTFS by modifying /etc/fstab as describe here:
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20090913140023382 This made one of my USB NTFS formatted extdernal harddisks unreadable. After connecting it to a Windows machine and running CHKDSK, I could, however, revive it.
