Looks like Git is trying to create the files, and there's a communications error with the SSHFS that's preventing it from doing so. For what it's worth, I've found a few problems with Git on another filesystem which wasn't reporting the 'ctime' correctly (or at least, as Git expected) - so doing "git config --global core.trustctime false" turns that off.
