Hi,

MacFUSE is a shared component used by other software, and as an end user you should not need to worry about it.
Examples of software that might install MacFUSE along with it:
- NTFS-3G / Tuxera NTFS for Mac (driver for the Windows filesystem NTFS)
- fuse-ext2 (driver for the Linux filesystem Ext2)
- VMware Fusion (for accessing virtual disks)
- Parallels Desktop (the same as above, I think)
- MacFusion
...and probably many more.

If you remove it, other software might stop working so I would recommend you to keep it. However, if you remove it and some of your software stops working, you can easily install it again by downloading it from: http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/

Regards,

- Erik

I just noticed MacFUSE in system prefs after installing 10.6. I'm an
unsophisticated user, not a developer, and would like some specific
examples of why MacFUSE would benefit me or not, and how it came to be
installed without my knowledge.

Thanks!
