So after a lot of building and cleaning and reinstalling, I find that MacFuse and macports' implementation/packaging of the macfuse core can't co-exist. But since I have sshfs working, I'm going to go with the macports version. sshfs and friends, if installed via macports, require their version of macfuse to be present.
A working sshfs means that macfuse works as advertised, even on my ancient hardware. Does anyone have any ideas or interest in helping me get flickrfs working? I don't know at present how to generate any useful debugging info.
