It's mostly BSD code. All the collateral you need to take the codebase into your desired direction is available. Among other things related to the history of the project, there's strong branding/affiliation/association of "MacFUSE" with "Google". Google-official MacFUSE releases are signed with private keys that (chain of trust) belong to Google. ("Belong" as in they are Google's liability.) It wouldn't be nice to confuse users in all kinds of ways. Plus, as for "neglected", stay tuned for something in the Mac OS X Lion time-frame.
