Thanks. My latest find on Windows is http://www.theopencd.org, a group
who have a downloadable CD of the good open source desktop software. They
mention doing the same thing for Macs, which would I think be a very good
idea.

Fink, fink.sourceforge.net, already does this somewhat, but is aimed a bit
more at the average linux/bsd user.

Me neither, though a lot of those issues are in the Mac world too [the
stupidity of licences, programs that don't let you get into the guts of
them when you need to etc].

I have at least had one breakthrough. Apparantly Ascii and Hex WEP keys
are 'happily' interchangable.

So:

4142434445 as a 40bit hex WEP key is equal to
ABCDE as a 40bit ascii WEP key.

where the ascii value for A is 41
B is 42 etc.

So as long as a hex WEP key does not contain any characters below 20 [20
is the hex for a space character. thigns below 20 are control characters
and thus hard to type] then I can probably convert my hex key by hand.

By using a conversion table, like the one found at
http://www.asciitable.com/

Again, not OS X specific, but still quite useful to know.
