Thought I would chime in, and you are right, when I begin having 
"quirky" activity (this can include many anomalies) I simply do the 
Disk Warrior, TechTools Pro and Cocktail trio maintenance.  Cocktail 
will do the repair permissions as well as several other repairs.

  I keep several of these machines running 24/7/365 with little or no 
problems.  My programmer was trying to make a correction to our 
database, he continued to have one freeze after another, finally he 
thought he would try the "repair permissions", and that completely 
corrected the problem.

It is good to know.
