Mike,
In the Finder window, check under View, it says : show view options . 
Select : show item info,click the button, and it will show the sizes of 
your HD, iDisk or files and the sizes of your pictures on the desktop. 
Unclick it, and the sizes disappear. It is in the same place where you 
can choose the size of the icons on the desktop , and whether the 
writing should be below or to the right of the icon.
