stuart: i also use a g4 cube.
i've been running os x on the cube for about three years now and have had almost no trouble at all, though i also had very little legacy / os 9 peripherals / software. between the os 9 emulation and virtual p.c. i'm able to run my few non-mac / non-os x programs as well. did you upgrade the stock graphics card when you bought your cube? that might be an issue as well as the default card came with 16 mb graphics card and os x recommends (?) 32 mb graphics card minimum. you will prob. need extra ram (the cube will hold 1.5 gb) and i'd recommend as much as you can afford as everything will run better / smoother etc. i added external firewire hard-drives for storage as well. itunes / iphoto / etc. are all stored on the external drive without any (that i can tell) performance hit. i'll go out on a limb here (mactown will know for sure) but i think external storage will run you about a dollar per gigabyte. os x will be at least a hundred. ram fluctuates but i've seen it around a hundred for a 512 mb chip - much less for 256 mb chips. as a negative, the cube is approaching 4 years old and that's getting a bit long-in-the-tooth. i'd guess if you price upgrades and they cost more than half a new imac, then maybe it's not worth it for you? what ever you do seriously consider the superdrive / dvd burner option. you may not think you'll need it but you may be surprised! my plan, in the next year or so, is to purchase a new mac for productivity and pass the cube on to my grandfather! however, with most of my data on the external drive i'll just plug it into the new mac and be up and running in seconds. the cube is a fantastic machine. good luck! ted.
