Unfortunately, while there is iTunes for both PC and Mac the hard drive
formats are different. I used to have all my music on an old G3 Mac
(the blue-white tower model) and would sync my iPod to that. When I
switched to the PC version of iTunes what I had to do was re-format the
iPod, and then copy the music files over the network from my Mac to the
PC, import those songs into iTunes for Windows, and then sync that with
the iPod.

Pretty laborious but for my use it was worth it--the $300 PC not only
rips CD's three times faster than the old G3 did, I now use that PC with
iTunes as a music server (plugged the sound card into my stero
receiver). Pretty cheap for a dedicated music machine.

As for the iTunes Music Store, one account works across multiple
machines (I think it's 3 or 5 machines, can't remember the exact
number). So for example, from work I use my iBook logged into my iTunes
account to shop for music that I put into the shopping cart. Then when
I get home I log into that same iTunes account from my Windows machine
and all the music I put into the shopping cart is there waiting for me
to purchase and download.

What iTunes does not support is downloading the same shopping cart
multiple times--you download the songs to one machine only. But you can
then copy the files to another iTunes machine and, as long as you log in
with the same account that you used to buy that music, you're able to
play the songs.

Rex, I have aquestion that relates to this, my son has a new ipod,
and has a windows laptop(toshiba). We have only mac, so how do you
transfer the music files between the mac and pc. Are they compatable?
Should he set up a new music store account to work with the pc laptop or
use our account that is on our mac?
Thanks for any input.

Real Networks has temporarily slashed the price of music from their
online store, and formally launched the version of RealPlayer that
supports the iPod:

I have no idea if this works with the Mac version of RealPlayer, I can
however confirm that it works with the PC version (I use an el-cheapo
Windows PC as my iTunes/iPod machine because it's faster and cheaper
than a low-end iMac would be). The downside--iTunes has a nasty habit
of removing any music files it finds on the iPod that weren't placed by
iTunes itself. So it tends to erase the music files you transfer using
RealPlayer. However you can then just re-copy all the files back over
from RealPlayer.
