I've never been convinced that either is necessary. The installer 
script embedded in the updater can set permissions. Why would the Disk 
Utility program know better how to set permissions than the people who 
write installer scripts? I prefer not to let the Disk Utility mess 
around with my hard drive, unless I suspect there's a problem it can 
fix.
