There is a good (if outdated) book by Danny Goodman which gives the 
basics of Applescripting: Danny Goodman's AppleScript Handbook.

Do you mean that the script editor opens in Classic? You can get a new 
version of the script editor from apple's website (or if you want to 
write really fancy stuff, try AppleScript Studio 
(http://www.apple.com/applescript/studio/). Apple also has a lot of links 
to other items at http://www.apple.com/applescript/studio/
