Before you go out and plunk down $100 (or more) for a new battery, here
are a few things you can try.

(1) Reset the power manager. How you do this depends on the model of
your Powerbook. Google on some combination of powerbook, battery and
power manager to find out for your model.

(2) Reset the PRAM and NVRAM on your machine. To reset the PRAM on most
machines, hold down the option+apple+P+R at startup and let it bong
three or four times to make sure you get the NVRAM and the PRAM.

(3) You can also reset all this stuff by booting into the firmware and
typing the commands reset-nvram and reset-all. You get into open
firmware by pressing apple+option+O+F while booting.
