It sounds like Diane got you started on the right path (sorry gang!)
One thing that will help with the older systems when upgrading is to
download the standalone installers and run those rather than running
the SUPP updates. Especially with the combo updates.
Why is a very good questions, but 'tis one of those tried and proven
approaches.
