Have them seriously consider Filemaker Pro.

Spreadsheets are good for some types of database work, but a true db 
program will give you a lot more flexibility. If cost is a major 
consideration, Appleworks does have a db module that isn't bad.

Using a db program allows easier manipulation of the data and worlds 
better presentation of the records.
