The only real problem may be the mixing of SCSI and ATA.
On a SCSI system, OS-X wants to be put on SCSI ID#0, and on the "root"
partition of that drive at that.
You will be able to see files in both directions, that is OS-X sees
OS-9 files just fine and vice-versa.
OS-X does not have to have the drives (SCSI or otherwise) to be
formatted using only HFS+, it can be in the "other" UNIX format, but
this is the way to go so that OS-9 can see the drive correctly and some
programs and utilities in OS-X expect HFS+ drive formatting.
XPostFacto is coming out with version 3 "soon" that will allow OS-X to
be put on another drive (like an external firewire) and still be
bootable and this may solve your problem. [XPostFacto is a utility that
lets you put OS-X on the older unsupported Macs -- though you will need
to have a G3 or G4 upgrade card in them to run Jaguar -- 10.2.x].
The current XPostFacto may help with what you are doing.
You are right, there are quite a few UNIX programs that you will find
useful. If you are going to jump all the way to 10.2, then you might
find the beta X11 from Apple worth downloading and using.
