I've had my G4 Powerbook since Dec 2003 & haven't had any problems with it, in spite of using both Classic OS 9 and Panther OS10.3 for the different software apps that I use. I felt the AppleCare cost for the laptop too steep. During the course of the first year, when it was under the original warantee, I got little satisfaction from the tech support at Apple. They always blamed the 3rd party software... I got much better support through the MUG Listserve and all the great help from this group, the CES unit in JCPS (although you have to get the names of those well-versed in the ways of Macs & not PCs), as well as our friends at MacTown.
So my response to your question is no, it's not worth it...Just be sure to keep the protective plastic between the keyboard & screen to avoid keyboard imprints on the screen (if you shove it into a carrying case to haul it to & fro), and use a protective carrying case if the machine is mobile, of course...
