I don't know. I just noticed it myself a few days ago when I was messing around with the root crontab to automate backups. The interesting part is that the old scripts are still there; they're just not being called by cron any more. Apple is calling the periodic program directly, and I haven't dug down to see if the same scripts are being called in the end, or how the scheduling is working.
