I figured it out. First it doesn't work in Thunderbird In other applications (AppleWorks) the contextual menu has Check Selection Spelling. I was looking for the word Dictionary and couldn't see the forest for the trees.
Not that this knowledge will improve my spelling, but thanks for the tip.
