Telephone contact for hardware is on-going for one year. Apple  
Support for yada yada is limited as you suggest. I had an iBook  
battery replaced 11 months in at no cost. I do think this can be  
sorted without sending it in. Have you let the battery go all the way  
down to the shutdown point, then recharged?
