Appleworks does spell checking before you send, but I like it as I go 
along, and the spellcheck at Appleworks does one more bothersome  
thing, it won't let you correct anything on your own, if you see a 
mistake while it is in the checking mode. This is especially annoying 
when it is a mistake that spellchecking does not catch  anyway, because 
it is wrong  only in context , or in a plural  etc.
And Apple's "Mail" checks spelling either way, while or after you write.
